Phase-out of Greenhouse Intensive Hot Water Systems:

The Australian and state and territory governments are working together to phase-out greenhouse intensive hot water systems, commencing during 2010. This phase-out will result in the reduction of greenhouse gases by about 30 million tonnes over ten years from 2010-2020 and assist householders to save money on their electricity bills.

Water heating is the largest single source of greenhouse gas emissions from most Australian homes. On average, each electric hot water system produces around four tonnes of greenhouse gases every year. That’s at least two-and-a-half times the greenhouse gases produced by other more efficient technologies and equivalent to running an average sized car for a year.Almost half of Australian households have electric hot water systems.

The Commonwealth and state and territory governments are working together to phase-out these greenhouse intensive hot water systems, commencing during 2010. This phase-out will result in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions of almost 30 million tonnes over the next ten years. The Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts suggests Heat Pumps as a low emission choice.
