RECs
Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs):
- are an electronic form of currency initiated by the Renewable Energy (Electricity) Act 2000;
- may be created, on the internet based registry system (known as the REC Registry), by eligible parties for each megawatt-hour of eligible renewable electricity generated or deemed to have been generated;
- are traded between registered persons or traded separately from the physical electricity market via the REC Registry; and
- are eventually surrendered to demonstrate liability compliance against the requirements of the Australian Government’s mandatory renewable energy target or voluntary surrender.
Owners of eligible solar water heater installations are eligible for RECs. However, owners of eligible solar water heater installations have the option to claim RECs themselves by completing the appropriate application forms or assign their right to claim RECs to an agent.
For assistance in trading your RECs, Siddons Solarstream recommend Greenbank Environmental - the largest independent trader of RECs in Australia.

Claiming RECs for Commercial Installations
Please note that the manifolded commercial models have been discontinued, only single tank Heat Pump models up to 425 litres are now allowed.
However, RECs can be claimed for commercial installations but the water heaters cannot be manifolded together. More than one Water Heater can be installed at the same location, with the RECs added for each model installed.
You are required to submit two statutory declarations to ORER prior to creating RECs. One to be filled out by the owner and the other by the installer.
For more information and to download the forms please visit ORER or our downloads page.
